Petition to Livermore City Council
Dear Livermore City Council:
-
Big Tobacco spends over $7 billion a year to deliberately keep prices low because they know over 100 studies have shown that higher prices reduce smoking among teens and inspire adults to quit.
-
Cheap products like cigarillos are available at most Livermore tobacco retailers for $1.99 or less.
-
Tobacco use kills more people every year than AIDS, alcohol, illegal drugs, murder, suicide, and traffic accidents combined. Smoking alone costs Livermore an estimated $130 million per year.
-
Some California cities have limited the number of tobacco licenses they issue, or even phased out tobacco sales altogether.
-
Livermore’s tobacco laws were groundbreaking in 2019. Since then, other cities in the Bay Area and statewide have adopted stronger protections.
Please take this information into account as you consider ways to protect youth and public health in Livermore.
